This is where we combine the art of Making, Knowledge and Expertise, across multiple disciplines to create our Biomaterials.

Our expertise blends Engineering with more than 20 years of experience in the Fashion and Lifestyle industries, strengthened by the insights of Material Scientists, Winemakers, Material Makers, and Industrial partners.

Together, we are shaping a new generation of Biomaterials.

From grape marc to material.

Inside the savoir-faire behind Savigne by Planet of the Grapes®. From Provence vineyards to colour, texture, testing and production.

Our process brings together winemaking, material science, design, engineering and manufacturing expertise to develop grape-derived biomaterials for fashion, accessories, objects and lifestyle applications.

Grape marc

The Savigne development process

A regional material journey shaped through terroir, sourcing, preparation, design, testing and production.

01
Collecting grape marc

Grape skins, seeds and stalks are collected from partner vineyards in Provence after the wine harvest.

02
Preparing the raw material

The grape marc is dried and prepared for biomaterial development in Provence.

03
Designing colour and texture

Colour, finish, backing, handle and surface expression are refined through the studio in Aix en Provence.

04
Testing performance

Materials are tested for abrasion, flex, rub fastness, water resistance, humidity and light exposure with independent laboratories.

05
Producing Savigne

Savigne is made in prototyping rolls of 45cm widths through to industrial scale 140cm widths in Italy.

Collecting grape marc in Provence.

Our primary raw material comes direct from the winemakers in Provence.

Each year, the wine harvest takes place across Provence at the end of summer. Once the grapes have been picked and pressed, the remaining grape marc - the skins, seeds and stalks - becomes the starting point for our biomaterials.

Planet of the Grapes works with organic and biodynamic vineyards in Provence, collecting selected grape marc before drying and preparing it for material development.

Designing

We have our core collection that can be ordered direct from our studio in Aix en Provence.

To develop a bespoke material for a collaborator, we define and refine the required colour, texture, backing, handle and finish, also in our studio.

Our colour specialist can reproduce precise shades, while our materials team researches, tests and validates each surface expression before it moves forward into production.

Color development
Custom colour matching across seasonal, brand-specific or project-led palettes.
Texture Exploration
Development of bespoke surfaces, finishes and material expressions.
Material validation
Reviewing handle, flexibility, thickness, finish and application suitability.

Testing the material performance

Maintaining the quality of Savigne biomaterials means ensuring they are tested to understand durability, movement, colour behaviour and surface resistance.

Before a material moves into production, it is tested to understand how it performs through use.

Abrasion resistance
Flex resistance
Rub fastness
Water spot resistance
Humidity resistance
Lightfastness / UV exposure

From small batch to industrial production.

Once a material is validated, Savigne can move from development into production.

All materials begin with small-batch productions of 45cm widths, allowing the team to evaluate flexibility, thickness, colour, handle, finish and performance before scaling, as well as enabling Designers to prototype their creations.

Once validated, production can move into larger runs with our manufacturing partners in Italy, with rolls produced at 140 cm width for fashion, accessories, objects and design applications.
