Roots in Motion: Anciela x Planet of the Grapes

For London-based sustainable luxury label ANCIELA, fashion is a conversation between memory and material innovation. How do we honor what we inherit while shaping what we create next?
For SS27, founder Jennifer Droguett Espinosa explores this through ‘Roots’. The collection uses the relationship between mother and daughter as a living metaphor for our connection to Mother Earth. Moving between past traditions and resilient futures, Roots redefines adaptive tailoring.
Presented during London Fashion Week at Regent Quarter, the runway subverted traditional formats - fusing rescued textiles and next-generation materials with immersive installation and live performance.
Terroir and Transformation
The material journey of this collection begins far from the design studio, rooted deeply in the terroir of Provence.
Savigne originates from the organic and biodynamic vineyards of the South of France. By recovering the grape skins, stalks, and seeds left behind after the harvest, Planet of the Grapes transforms agricultural by-products into a tactile, plant-based material. It carries the physical imprint of the land and the hands that tend it.
But really, a biomaterial only truly reveals its character when it leaves the factory. Its limits and language are found through the physical act of making - in the cutting, stitching, and shaping of the atelier.
Anciela’s SS27 collection provided the perfect landscape to test these boundaries, blending Savigne with vintage silks donated by artist Allegra Hicks, rescued wool suiting from Orsola de Castro, and certified Tencel. By entering this creative space, our grape-derived material introduced a different kind of inheritance: the physical residue of one industry giving life to the expression of another.
Letting the Material Speak

Working with emerging biomaterials requires a shift in perspective. The true challenge is resisting the urge to force a new material to mimic the familiar textures of animal leather or synthetic textiles.
Savigne does not exist to replace what came before. It possesses its own unique character, its own structural constraints, and its own sensory possibilities.
Anciela’s design philosophy opens up the ideal space for this fluid exploration. Built around modular circularity, the collection features adjustable panels, detachable sleeves, and layered elements that transform around the body. As Savigne is integrated into these adaptive garments, it retains a visible, honest connection to its agricultural origins while proving its durability and performance.
ANCIELA, A Multi-Dimensional Context

The SS27 presentation expanded far beyond the garment itself, transforming fashion into a platform for shared culture.
Alongside the runway, guests interacted with a tactile installation showcasing Anciela's work with various material innovators. A three-act live performance, directed by filmmaker Marie Lanna and featuring artist Luzmira Zerpa, explored themes of ancestry and ecological regeneration. By inviting the audience to actively contribute to collective pieces, the event turned observers into active participants in the narrative.
For us at Planet of the Grapes, these partnerships drive a much broader vision. While our materials remain fundamentally rooted in agriculture and Provençal savoir-faire, their future belongs to a wider creative ecosystem. Each collaboration builds new, unexpected pathways: bridging wine and fashion, science and craft, industry and design.
The Roots collection shows what happens when these layers converge. The result is not just a more sustainable iteration of existing fashion, but the emergence of entirely new material categories that could not have existed before.
