Agaperos x Planet of the Grapes: rethinking craft through grape-based biomaterials

Some collaborations begin with a shared aesthetic. Others begin with a question of behaviour: how does a new material respond in the hands of someone who understands construction, finishing and detail?

The collaboration between Agaperos and Planet of the Grapes began there.

Founded by Marseille-based designer and maker Isabelle Megret Renner, Agaperos brings together slow fashion values, refined product knowledge and a deep sensitivity to materials. Isabelle’s experience with high-end French materials made her a natural collaborator for Planet of the Grapes - especially for Canyon, one of the most recognisable finishes within the Savigne by Planet of the Grapes® family.

Canyon is developed from grape marc, the skins, seeds and stems left behind after winemaking. Its surface is matte, irregular and quietly expressive - shaped like terrain, with a topographical quality that catches light through texture rather than shine. It feels grounded and tactile, with the kind of surface that asks to be understood closely.

A slow fashion collaboration rooted in Marseille

The project was created for the first edition of Slow Fashion Week Marseille, where Planet of the Grapes and Agaperos came together through a shared belief in more considered fashion systems. The partnership was local, intentional and grounded in craft.

A material does not become meaningful through development alone. It becomes understood through cutting, testing, stitching, finishing and repeated handling. Makers reveal what a material can do: how it holds, where it needs care, how it responds to pressure, and what kind of object it wants to become.

Agaperos brought that level of attention to Canyon.

With Agaperos, the collaboration became a process of discovery. Isabelle brought the eye of a maker who understands finishing, proportion and refined construction, then used that knowledge to explore Canyon beyond familiar material references.

Canyon has a firm, structured handle in its main expression, with a papery quality that is stronger than it first suggests. It cuts well with scissors or scalpel, responds effectively to standard sewing machines, and lends itself to clean edges, contained forms and more architectural shapes.

That made the collaboration especially valuable. The point was not to ask Canyon to behave like something already known. It was to allow its own qualities to come forward: its relief, its restraint, its irregularity, its ability to hold structure, and the quiet drama of its surface.

As Sam puts it,

“This is a totally new material.”

The Agaperos collaboration helped make that idea tangible - not as a limitation, but as an invitation to test, adapt and create with a material that carries its own identity.

What skilled craft reveals about new materials

This partnership demonstrates the importance of skilled making in biomaterial development. Agaperos Creation tested how the material could behave in refined product construction, bringing an eye for detail that helped reveal its strengths and possibilities.

For Planet of the Grapes, the collaboration became more than a single project for Slow Fashion Week. It developed into an ongoing creative exchange, with Isabelle continuing to offer feedback, ideas and making knowledge as new materials and applications are explored.

That continuity is important. In sustainable fashion and biomaterials, progress often happens through close relationships between material developers and makers who are willing to test, question and refine.

The Agaperos Creation collaboration shows how a grape-based biomaterial can enter the world of slow fashion through craft, dialogue and a willingness to let the material become itself.
